Kings Island Pride Night returns on September 11

by Michael X. Chanak

Cincinnati-Pride Night at Kings Island returns for the 13th year on Friday, September 11. It's a night to meet family and friends, and support the Cincinnati Gay and Lesbian Center.

Pride Night proceeds help to cover the center's yearly operating expenses. This event is a unique night of fun, rides and entertainment.

As an added bonus, advance ticket prices are $5 less than general admission and include free

parking, so don't miss the chance to be part of Pride Night 2009, when over 3,000 family and friends meet.

Pre-sale tickets are $40, while tickets are $45 at the gate.

See www.cincyglbt.com for ticket outlets, afterglow party information and group discounts.

The center is currently updating the Pride. Night web page at www.cincy lbt.com. Check back periodically for the opening of the online ticket store, ticket

outlet information and event-specific information. Regular Kings Island season passes are not valid the night of the event. For specific questions, e-mail, pridenight @cincyglbt.com.

The parking area at Kings Island is available to guests beginning at 5 pm with admission gates opening at 6 pm on September 11. The event concludes at midnight. This year's chairperson for the Pride Night event is Rusty Lockett, the

organization's clerk (rusty.lockett@cincyglbt .com).

The Cincinnati GLBT Community Center is a non-profit organization founded in 1993 with a mission to provide information, support, resources, social activities and meeting space to the GLBT community.

Metro Youth camp can be twice as big this year

by Christen DuVernay

Cleveland Opportunities are available to sponsor a young person for the Cleveland LGBT Center's second annual MYOut camp, July 19-21. So many of you stepped forward last year that the center was able to send ten young people to camp for free. This year, the hope is to double the attendance and length of camp. You, sponsoring a youth for summer camp, can offer a life-changing experience.

MYOut will provide a variety of community building, self-reflection, learning, and fun activities for LGBTQA youth ages 14-19. Planned activities include workshops and classes in self-defense, positive self image, healthy relationships, self-expression, activism, safer sex and advocacy as well as nature hikes, water balloon fights, arts and crafts, athletic, and other summer activities.

"There's a multitude of summer camps and summer opportunities for heterosexual youth to socialize with one another and to develop

a positive sense of self and identity," says Jaime Bishop, the center's youth support coordinator. "The same cannot be said for youth who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender."

Until, that is, MYOut.

Sponsorships amounts are $25 for meals for one youth, $50 for a half scholarship and $100 for a full scholarship.

With your help, MYOut Summer Camp aspires to give youth who otherwise would not have such an unforgettable weekend to

meet others, make new friends, foster leadership, develop life skills and have fun in a healthy, accepting, and supportive environ-

ment.

For more information or to sponsor a youth to attend, contact Christen DuVernay at 216651-5428 ext. 16 or cduvernay

@lgbtcleveland.org.

Christen DuVernay is the Metro Youth Outreach activities coordinator for the Cleveland LGBT Center.

Worship service marks 40th anniversary of Stonewall

by Rev. Allen Harris

Cleveland-Recognizing that the past informs the present and the present guides us to the future, the Spiritual Leaders Group of Cleveland will once again offer an interfaith Pride Worship Service on Sunday, June 21 at 5:30 pm at Trinity Cathedral.

It is timed so that people attending the North Coast Men's Chorus concert across.

the street at Cleveland State University's Waetjen Auditorium will easily be able to attend the service afterwards.

In keeping with the theme of the entire Pride festivities, the service's focus is "Generations of Pride: From Riots to Registry." Using dramatic visuals in photography and film, interspersed with commentary from community and faith leaders and inspiring music, this service will commemorate the 40th anniversary of

the Stonewall uprising following the adage, “We are because they were.'

Through literal snapshots of LGBTQ history, from the Stonewall riots to Harvey Milk, from Matthew Shepard to our own Cleveland domestic partnership registry, participants will commemorate the many ways in which, in fact, the "arc of history bends toward justice."

Trinity Episcopal Cathedral is located at 2230 Euclid Avenue, and there is ample

parking in the church's lot on Prospect Ave. Everyone is welcome, and the attire is casual. There is no charge for the event, however, donations will be accepted. There is a reception following the event in the church's Trinity Commons. For more information please call Rev. Allen Harris at 216-272-0622. V

Rev. Allen Harris is the pastor of Franklin Circle Christian Church, and a member of the Spiritual Leaders Group.
